Tcm:TB reviewTexas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is just what you'd expect; a prequel. But...only about the first 10-15 minutes actually explain Leatherface's beginnings. The rest of the movie is pretty much all about Hoyt. Oh yeah, there's one scene where Leatherface gets his skin-mask, but that's about it. It just...doesn't really feel like a true prequel to me. ANYWAY, the teens are kind of "meh" here. I find it hard to care about any of them, but I'm not exactly throwing a party when they die. I did end up liking Jordana Brewster's character (can't even remember her name XD), just because of all the shit she goes through. I do especially LOVE the scene where she's just about to escape from the house, and the camera pans out and shows how close she is to getting out, but she hears the screams of her friend from the upstairs bedroom, and the look on her face is just AMAZING. She looks like she's thinking "I'm so fucked," because she won't let herself run unless she saves her friend first. And, if you watch the movie, you know how that ends up. I just thought that was a really powerful scene, possibly one of the best in the entire movie. Hoyt is such a prick in this movie. It seems as though he's the real monster in all of this, using Leatherface as a tool to kill instead of treating him like a human being. His torturing of the two guys is BRUTAL. Oh my God, he's such a dick! But he totally makes it work. I was cheering when the blond guy got his "revenge." XD IMO, there were too many family members in this movie (my same complaint with the remake). It just seemed too crowded and not really as scary as the original clan. The fat tea lady and the old woman just seem too...nice to be in the family. I guess Old Monty is supposed to be Grandpa, but he's still alive, so it's kind of like "wut." Leatherface just seems like a Columbine reject with a skin disease. His motives are more or less "revenge" rather than familial responsibility. Not that it isn't almost drilled into his head that the people who come to the house are the people who made fun of him when he was little. Or did I just dream that part? I dunno. I do like the part where the blond chick is tied underneath the table, she sees Leatherface and freaks out, and Leatherface just looks at her like "bitch." XD Kinda makes it seem like he gets pissed when people see him as a monster/freak, but it's hard not to when he's got a mask on. The final saw-chase is pretty good. Nothing like the original, but good for what it is. One thing I do have to mention though is the ending. I'm sure it's been done in other horror movies, but it really threw me for a loop and all I could do was sit there with the credits rolling in awe. I never thought they'd do something like that, and the ending has stuck with me the entire time. It's shocking, gruesome, but gorgeous at the same time. I LOVE how he strokes her face with his hand. It's just...buh. ; o; Almost like he's remorseful or something. The opening voiceover being done at the end is bad-ass as hell. OH YEAH. For the normal fangirls: the two main guys are hotties. And the blond guy takes his shirt off. For the fangirls somewhere south of sane: Leatherface is kind of sexy with the skin-mask. :3 ANYWAY. TCM:TB is okay, I guess. Not the best installment of the series,
but it's pretty good. MUCH better than the remake! |
