Tcm2 reviewI was a bit wary of checking out TCM2, because I'd heard so many mixed
reviews about it. Some people liked it, some people really hated it, others
said it was so-so. There wasn't really a major percentage going either
way, and I wasn't sure what to think. So I held off on watching it...for
about five years. XD So I finally decided to watch it, and all I can wonder
is "OMG why didn't I watch this sooner?!" The plot takes a different route from the original formula; in this flick, the main heroine "Stretch" overhears two teens being murdered with a chainsaw through a call on her radio station, and tries to find out what happened. She's quite unpleasantly surprised when Leatherface and his brother Choptop come find her instead of the usual plot device of the heroine unknowingly stumbling into the villain's lair. The beginning of the movie is a bit of a turn-off in comparison to the rest of the movie, because it sets you up for a really horrifying time (like the first one did with the creepy narration and the scrolling words), but after you watch the movie, they seemed out of place. And maybe it's just me, but I think the narrator talked a bit too fast. It did kind of tie up some loose ends from the ending of the first movie, though not quite in the way I would have liked. So now we get to the characters. CHOPTOP. OH. MY. GOD. Choptop is Leatherface's brother who was in Vietnam during the first movie, which explains his absence from the original; he was injured in the war and had a metal plate put in his head that he scratches almost every second. If you watch this movie for one reason, let it be Choptop. You will NOT be disappointed. Choptop steals every scene he's in. He's just that hilarious. This movie would probably be lame as hell if he wasn't in it. And when he gives Leatherface a high-five? Ah, I fucking lost it. XD Leatherface is way different in this one, a hell of a swerve from the crazy fucker in the original. Now, he's ditched the apron and the kind-of-sexy mask; in this version, he dons a suit and a shitty mask. He's a hell of a lot more sensitive in this one, developing a crush on the main heroine (which, as creepy as it is, is pretty damn cute, but that's the fangirl in me talking). The scene where he feels Stretch up with the chainsaw is just fucking priceless. Ah, sexual tension. <3 And guess who plays the role of Lefty, the "chainsaw cowboy?" Motherfucking Dennis Hopper! I love the scene where he breaks into the Sawyer's lair and he has two chainsaws strapped to his sides like six-shooters. XD Towards the end he practically goes insane, but it's fun to watch. :D The Cook is pretty much the same character from the first one. He's still majorly abusive (physically and verbally) to his family, and he's still crazy as hell. The Grandpa is pretty much the same as well, though it looks like he grew some hair he didn't have in the original. He actually looks younger here, which confuses the hell out of me. Don't watch this expecting a serious movie. It bears reiterating because so many people hear "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and think they're getting just as much of a mindfuck as the first. The second half of this movie just goes totally insane and hilarious, but there's more than enough gore to keep you satisfied if you're into that kind of thing, but the amount of blood is almost too over-the-top, so if blood squicks you, it shouldn't here since it's so overdone. Also, it's not really that scary. Every time something creepy happens, something happens right after to make you laugh, so this would be a good flick to watch if you want something kinda scary, but mostly lulzy. Overall, if you're a fan of the original, you should see it, since IMO
it's the best sequel. If you like goofy, campy, silly horror movies, definitely
watch this. If you go in thinking you're getting something like the original,
you'll be disappointed and hate it, but if you go in with an open mind,
you'll love it. |
